Dental Health

Local Statistics

18% of Medicaid recipients received dental services.

Northeast region is the second most critical in the state for:

 caries history (55.4%),

untreated decay (26.1%), and,

early and urgent treatment needs (25%).

Having the 8th worst Medicaid Dental Reimbursement rate in the United States, those on Medicaid or who are uninsured find it difficult to recieve dental care.  The problem of dental care access for persons on Medicaid has been
documented through Manitowoc County Community Health Assessments
over the years. Lakeshore Community Action Program (CAP) survey
indicated that low-income persons cited "the need for dental access"
consistently as the number two need by their clientele. This serious and
multifacted problem is a local, state and national one requiring actions on
many levels.

A variety of approaches have been attempted over the past decade to
increase dental access for low-income people. Low reimbursement rates,
high no-show rates and burdensome Medicaid paperwork have contributed
to the access issue.

Dedicated volunteers serving on the Dental health Improvement
Committee are working to increase access to dental care.
